Chemistry is taught as a separate subject by specialist teachers from the Third Year upwards.
The Chemistry department at the College has four well equipped specialist Chemistry laboratories, each furnished with fume cupboards and interactive whiteboards with access to data logging equipment and laptop computers. There are a number of general science laboratories used for Chemistry teaching as well.
Staff bring both enthusiasm and expertise to their lessons and aim to give all students a good grounding in the knowledge and understanding of chemistry and its importance to everyday life, as well as inspire them to take their studies of the central science further. The Edexcel IGCSE, International General Certificate of Secondary Education, and the Edexcel 9CH0 A Level courses are followed and a range of modern methods are incorporated, including a variety of computer resources, as well as extensive experimental work.
Each year group is extended with activities such as a Science Club, Chemistry Club, the Science Live conference (Fifth Year) and lectures at University College London. The department enters a number of interschool competitions, including the Salters' Festival of Chemistry, Surrey SATRO Problem Solving Competition, Top of the Bench, the Cambridge Chemistry challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad. In addition, students are encouraged to attend Salters' Chemistry Camps and to apply for SATRO club Extended Research Placements to undertake research projects.
