Lower Sixth student wins gold medals on international rowing debut

Over the weekend of 28-30 July, Lower Sixth student Michael Dalton made his debut on the international rowing scene, competing in the Coup De La Jeunesse (European Championships) as part of the Great Britain Mens' Under 18 coxless IV.

Not only did Michael compete in his first international championships, but he also came away with a couple of very special medals.

Head of Rowing at St George's College, Mr Walters, has written a report on how Michael got on at the Championships:

"The regatta started well for Michael and the crew on Saturday, as they dominated their heat to make the A Final, finishing a length clear of the Swiss crew. They went on to repeat this form in the final to earn gold medals, leaving the Swiss to receive silver and the Czechoslovakian crew bronze.

The Coupe Regatta is an overall team event and so the crews race again on the Sunday enabling some countries to change the make-up of their crews to seek a better placing. With differing conditions on subsequent days, it is not unusual for the medal placings to change hands. But not so for the Great Britain IV. They won their heat once more moving on to the A final. In the final, they were once again dominant and took gold - this time silver went to Belgium, with Portugal in Bronze position.

This was a great weekend of racing for Michael and his crew. A fine end to Michael's season which was not without disruption due to injury. Michael remains Under 18 next year and this experience will prove a great foundation for next season. Very well done to Michael and his crew on this tremendous success."
