1st VII netball team rewrites history to win Surrey Schools' Netball Championships
On Sunday 12 March, St George's 1st VII were crowned Surrey Schools' Netball Champions for the first time in St George’s history!
Head of Netball at St George's College Miss Yeoman has provided a first hand account of this historic occasion below:
"With an early start on a grey Sunday morning at Epsom College, the girls started their campaign against a competitive Surbiton High School. We had faced this team many times in the past and knew it was going to be a great game to start the tournament. The girls took to the court with confidence and came away with a convincing win. The following pool matches saw just as exciting wins against James Allen's Girls' School, Alleyn's School, St Catherine’s School and Reigate Grammar.
Undefeated in the pools, St George’s went into the semi finals top of their group and were drawn against St John’s Leatherhead. With the semi finals came the rain, which made playing conditions tricky, but the St George’s team were outstanding in their control throughout the court. Top defence and slick shooting saw the girls ease into the final against local rivals Guildford High School.
This was always going to be a tough match, but the girls flew out of the blocks, taking an early lead with some outstanding turnovers. The game ended 12-9 to St George’s, much to the delight of the girls, it was an outstanding and well deserved achievement from this team. The solid defence by Bella T, Kyra and Chantelle, combined with fluid attack from Captain Alex, Bella RM and Meg and accurate shooting from Siri and Ore saw this success as a complete team effort."
Well done to all of the girls and to the coaches Miss Haynes and Miss Yeoman on this wonderful achievement, especially as this is the first time in St George’s history a senior team has won this title.14 March 2017
