1st VII netball team in great achievement
For the first time in the history of St George’s netball, the 1st VII reached the semi final of the Independent Schools' Netball Cup (ISNC) last week.
After a string of fine performances to reach the semi finals, the 1st VII netball squad at St George's College, Weybridge took on Millfield School on Wednesday 22 February. 1st VII Coach at St George's College, Miss Haynes provided a detailed report on the match below:
"Making it to the last four in the country we knew that the match wasn’t going to be easy, especially as we were knocked out by Millfield in last year’s quarter finals. After a shaky first quarter, the score was 13-7 to Millfield. The second quarter saw much improvements, the 1st VII then started to put pressure on the feeds into their shooter resulting in turnover balls. At one point St George’s had the opportunity to level the score, but unfortunately a missed shot meant that Millfield finished the half with a lead of 23-20.
After finishing so strongly in the second quarter, the girls entered the second half with more belief in their ability to win this game. The third quarter showed opportunities when they could have pushed ahead, but unfortunately due to some errors they trailed by 6 going into the last quarter. In the final quarter, St George’s gave every last ounce of energy they had with some fantastic interceptions from Alex Oldfield. But sadly time was up and the final whistle brought the game to an end, finishing 44-37 to Millfield. The girls should be incredibly proud of their performance throughout the whole competition, although it’s not the result we travelled down for, it is still a fantastic achievement."
